History & Heritage
Jinja began as a fishing village, became a British administrative center in 1901, and grew into an industrial hub after the Owen Falls Dam was built in 1954. The name “Jinja” means “stone” in Basoga and Baganda languages, inspired by Ripon Falls. Today, it thrives on tourism, hydropower, agriculture, and trade.
